I can’t believe it is August already and it seems like this summer is flying by! Brian and I have been extremely busy over the past few weeks and have had a lot of friends and family visit us. Last week my two youngest cousins were here and we had a blast in and around Chicago. We went to an incredible new playground in the Maggie Daily Park, the Lincoln Park zoo, the top of the Willis Tower, as well as the beach. We also ventured into Chinatown (twice!) because my cousins loved the Chinese food. My other cousin, Megan, was also here two weeks prior. We tore up the city by kayaking the Chicago river, visiting the Field Museum, and biking along the Lakeshore path. We also managed to go to an art festival and Navy Pier. [No wonder the blog posts have been few and far between :)]
One of the nice things I’ve discovered about Chicago is that there is a lot you can do for free and/or for very little cost. I was a little worried about my family members and I breaking the bank while they were here, but surprisingly it wasn’t bad! The playgrounds, beach, Navy Pier and zoo are all free (unless you want a souvenir or something), and a lot the museums charge less for Illinois residents. It also helps that Groupon often offers discounts for kayaking and the Willis tower (except we missed one of them)…and the bike rentals are only $9.99 for the day! It’s nice to be able to take advantage of where you live…and I glad I got to enjoy a lot of fun things with my family. I am sure there are a lot of similar opportunities in other cities as well 🙂
In addition to playing tourist, I was also able to capture a few photos here and there despite all of the running around. I am still trying to learn more about photography and I’m beginning to understand more and more about the basic concepts (like aperture, shutter speed, and ISO) as well as when to apply certain settings- but I’m still not very efficient when taking pictures. It takes me a minute to think about what settings I want to use (and why), and sometimes I miss a good photo opportunity because I’m too hung up on what setting to use! But I know that will get better with practice.
In any event, I hope you are all having a wonderful summer! I have a feeling August is going to be a great month (as long as I survive my upcoming bachelorrette party- ha!). I also have a few recipes coming your way (in case you are interested)- so stay tuned! I’ve been slacking big time:)
Below are a few of the photos from the past few weeks.
