More About the Author:
Heather currently lives in Chicago with her husband-to-be [Brian] and three (yes, three cats. It’s complicated). She is a recreational runner, mild environmentalist, munchkin-donut lover, and slight work-a-holic. She likes to indulge on good food (and wine!), occasional fine dining, and traveling… not to mention a good cup of coffee. Heather is also outgoing, quirky at best, and loves to have fun- especially with her friends and family. She is not, however, an extreme couponer nor will you find her on an episode of TLC’s Extreme Cheapskates. Although she does appreciate nice things, she will always and forever value experience over most items or “stuff.”
Heather started to become savvy with her resources while she was in college and living off of a student budget. In was then when she realized you don’t have to spend a lot of money in order to “afford” some of the things you like (read her first blog post here). Since then, she has been conscientious of her spending habits and loves finding a good deal. Although she and Brian both have great careers, she continues to work hard so she can enjoy life yet also achieve her financial goals. Some of which include: paying off her student loans, maxing out her retirement (or have the option to retire by age 55!), increase her emergency savings, cover some upcoming wedding expenses, and save up for the possibility of having children 🙂
Heather and Brian recently purchased their first home together, which is a third-story walk-up in Chicago’s south loop neighborhood. Although their condo was “move-in ready”, they have been focusing on making it their own by making other modifications and/or incorporating home decor that better reflects their individual tastes and personalities.
In order to save money, they have taken it upon themselves to go the DIY route with a lot of their large projects and other small tasks. Although DIY is often less expensive, it can also be time consuming and require a lot of work- especially in terms of planning and execution. It also does not help that they live on the third floor in a major city (but it does save on a gym membership!). How do we do it you ask? See below.
Although Heather and Brian are often exhausted after hauling everything up the stairs, they are both extremely grateful to live in a beautiful home and to have a space where they can work on their projects. They are also fortunate to have the time and resources to work on the things they enjoy. It also helps that Brian owns a truck (aka Big Blue!) and they live about a mile away from a major home improvement store.
In addition to working on various home projects, Heather is also trying to learn more about photography. Her goals are not only to take better photos for her blog, but to learn how to take portrait-style photos so she venture into DIY professional photos (especially if/or when she has children). She is also trying to improve her writing skills (it’s been a while, folks), establish her blog (what a learning curve), and to relearn Spanish (hola!) so she better serve her patients at work. She also dabbles with basic sewing (keyword: basic), cooking, and a little bit of gardening. If you can’t find her doing any of these things, she is likely out running, doing online “research,” or finding deals at local thrift stores.
